Wow, I was going to say "I don't think so", but I've checked up on it and I think you're right. The GameInformer site seems to be down at the moment, but I checked the page using Google's cache:

It looks like they're making a PS2 edition just for Europe, which will have localized content, and come out in 2008. Several other sites reported the same news (PS2 in Europe only) while others sites have just said it will be on PS2 but said nothing about it being the European version only.
It looks like maybe some gaming sites jumped the gun when reporting the PS2 edition and overlooked the finer details. If that's the case, I think a lot of people who just got their hopes up are now going to have them dashed.

| Pretty sure it's just awkward wording -- the PS2 localized European version will only be out in Europe. Seems obvious, but my guess is that they didn't want people to think there would be Rock Band: US, Rock Band: Europe, Rock Band: Australia, etc. all hitting US stores. |

It's certainly ambigous wording. I'll see if there's anything on the RB site.
EDIT: Not even mentioning the PS2 version at the moment.

Yep... gaming sites seem to be split down the middle, some are reporting Europe only and others make no mention of locality, assuming worldwide. We need to get a confirmation of this, because every thread I read someone is saying how excited they are they can "can get RB now that it's going to be on PS2".

Look, say what you want, but I'm telling you - it has only been announced for Europe so far. It's possible they may announce it for PS2 in America, too, but it's also possible they won't. Maybe they feel the PS2 market in Europe is still too large to ignore and the PS3 market to small, while in America they don't feel the need to release it on PS2 and will instead push people to move up and buy a PS3. You have to remember that companies do sometimes have ulterior motives to selling as many copies of a game as possible - such as only releasing a highly anticipated game on the console they will be developing their games on from now on in, in order to entice people to buy the new generation console.
I'm not saying a US PS2 version is unlikely. It's very likely. I'm just saying it's not yet confirmed, and I wouldn't take anything for granted until it is.

I'm certainly not going to get my hopes up in anticipation of a US Rock Band PS2 release, considering that unless it comes out for the Wii I have an excuse to finally get a 360.

Or it means that the PS2 version won't be coming out Q1 08. Maybe sooner or later. Or they just don't have a date on it.

That doesn't really seem likely, does it?
The press release lists both planned dates and planned systems for both regions. If they had a date for a US PS2 release, earlier or later, wouldn't it be listed alongside the 360 and PS3 US dates? And if they didn't have a date for one, which would be odd considering they have one for Europe, wouldn't they still list the system with a TBA date?
That a PS2 version is specifically mentioned for Europe and equally specifically not mentioned for the US, well... "they don't have a date" isn't exactly Occams Razor. |
