it's possible to change the tempo during the song, you need to add an event that changes it (not sure on how to do it whit your editor)...
the event, if i remember right, must be in the t1 gems track, but i'm not sure 'bout that, i've never changed tempo during the song...

as riz said, every octave correspond to a particular difficulty...

third and fourth track, animations and event, as you said, are unnecesary,

you forgot about the last track, EVENTS...
it contains only events that effect the band, that you can skip at the moment, and the end event, that's very important and you should not forget about it...

that is what concerne GH1 midi...

about synching the start of the midi and of the mp3, there are many ways, like using the freetar editor, and then converting the .sng file, or using a editor that let you put an audio track in the midi...
anvil allow you to do this, but only for a minute of audio, but that's enough for synching the start of the song...

I decided to take a look at another midi file, this time for the custom song Nightwish

http://img485.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nightwishcn9.jpg

The piano role in Anvil seems like the most practical way of writing custom songs. The only thing is, I fail to see a tempo track. Is it controlled by the meter in the top? There are 5 tracks...

PART GUITAR - I know this is necesary for Guitar Hero II and is where the fret information is

TRIGGERS - ??????

ANIM, EVENTS - unnecesary for now

Track 05 - ????

Anyway, from what I gather, I could just DELETE ALL the notes in the piano role and start fresh, make my own song, everything else would be set up the way it should. It would be really nice of someone to host somewhat of a TEMPLATE midi... a midi you can load up when you want to start a new song that has everything set up for you, you only have to adjust tempo and the actually fretting of the song.

I'm definately understanding this stuff better now, thanks guys.

That is exactly how I create songs... I have a template midi, and I just add notes in the piano roll view on-the-fly...Lots of trial and error... I set up one tempo for the whole song and just edit-test-repeat.

The only other thing that is neccessary is the [end] event. It must be edited to match the end of the music file, or else it will end early....

Any chance you could upload your template midi? I would definately like to be able to start with a blank midi instead of one riddles with events that don't pertain to the song I'm making.

I checked the event list and saw the END event you were talking about. From what I see, all I have to do is double click it and change the timing?

My template is no better than if you just took the Nightwish midi and erased the PART GUITAR track. You can always delete the events from the Nightwish midi.

Yes you just double click the end event and adjust the time of event value.

Just the sounds from all the other notes from the other tracks....all the notes are for is information...it isn't going to sound even remotely like the real song.

BTW, if you decide that you do want to fiddle with tempo events, they actually go on track 0, the track *before* T1 GEMS/PART GUITAR. This track contains two types of events: time signature changes, and tempo changes. How your particular editor displays this track to you and how you make adjustments on it is probably application specific.

Riz.

Awesome. You guys really have been tons of help btw, thank you.

I can't figure out tempo changes in Anvil... HOWEVER! I have synched up a song and put it into GHII and it WORKS! So... I'm very happy. I guess for now I'll just stick with songs with no tempo changes.

Thanks guys!

Have you guys ever tried using grace notes in a midi? Do you think GHII would pick up on them?

Grace notes work fine, just like any other note really. I've got a bunch in my Iron Maiden track, and I'm pretty sure they are used in a lot of songs from the game too.
