Either my English sucks, or bad grammar is getting even more popular in music.
I was just hearing Lights and Sounds by Yellowcard and heard: "You earns...". It's not the first time I hear typos like this. I'm gonna list s'more typos:
Master of Puppets: "Where's the dreams..."
Alesha Dickson - Breathe Slow: "You is taking..."
A song by Nickelback, I think: "I is..." "...so much faster than I"
So, SH, what do you think about this? Do they make this mistakes on prupose or not? _________________

They're definitely made on purpose to make the lyrics flow better. If they were going for 100% grammatical correctness, those would have definitely been caught. |

Do you really think people just go out and buy things because it says Where is instead of where are, and laugh because there's one tiny mistake in one lyric of the line? Do we live in Nazi Germany?

Poetic license = they can say whatever the hell they want. They probably make them on purpose to fit lyrics and flow better _________________

He wasn't claiming people wouldn't buy the music or laugh and make fun of it just because of the grammar... that's an incorrect leap you made from his post.
Yes, as people have said, it's artistic license. Sometimes correct grammar ruins the flow of the song as it can add syllables. When I opened this thread I thought it would be about band names and stuff that weren't proper grammar that use intentional mistakes like KoRn (the only example that comes to mind... even if it's not technically grammar or whatever). |

I'm surprised you didn't mention any rap songs. _________________

The Nickelback song you're referring to is "Never gonna be alone":
Time is going by
so much faster than I
I don't know where you're getting the I is from, but they picked I to rhyme with by
The one I will call Nickelback on is the song "believe it or Not" where Chad somehow thought that "everyone have" and "everyone believe" is correct.
The song's message is great, but the grammar...not so much.
I think that with the internet and text speak, people in general, not just musicians, aren't being as careful with their grammar because they can be a little sloppy and a lot of people won't notice anything wrong _________________

If they are commands this is correct. _________________

No, "I" only works if you are the topic of the sentence, not the object. Plus, "I" and "me" are the exact same amount of syllables: one. No excuse, and I don't think it "flows better" or anything. _________________

Do you know how many songs have grammatical error? Almost all of them, my friend. Have fun picking them out. _________________

"Where's the dreams that I've been after?"
"Where're the dreams that I've been after?"
"Where are the dreams that I've been after?"
Which sounds clearer and flows better? Definitely the original. _________________

Technically, that's correct grammar in the eyes of a walrus.
As for the OP, to reiterate what everyone else has said, it's whatever makes the song flow better.
Albums sell for a reason. Take Master of Puppets by Metallica. The album is 6x platinum in the US alone. Do you really think that people care about how James words "Where's the dreams that I've been after?"? I can guess not.
Interesting observations, but it won't amount to much. |
