Hey all,

Just thought I'd start a thread about ScoreHero's best albums that came out in 2011. Not really doing a voting system or anything like that, but yeah, what are some artists that released great albums this year? Any up-and-coming stuff we should check out? Or sleeper hits?

My picks:

Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues
Definitely my top pick for this year, and quite different from the stuff I usually like. It's perfect music for working and just all around awesome.

The Antlers - Burst Apart
I really liked this one too, despite being "eh" about the other album (I know, I know, I'm a blasphemer). Definitely check it out.

Foster the People - Torches
These guys are hitting it big fast - I saw them live at Austin City Limits and a few weeks later they played on Saturday Night Live. I'm really enjoying them as well.

Also I guess if you just want to list albums that you discovered this year that weren't necessarily released this year, that's fine too.

For me personally, the top album of 2011 was:

The Heart Goes To Heaven, The Head Goes To Hell by That Handsome Devil

Godforbid never ceases to amaze me with his music

Ahh I haven't heard the new fleet foxes album yet but their debut album was fantastic.

For me personally I have a few albums that I can't really decide between.

Grace for Drowning by Steven Wilson
Heritage by Opeth
Road Salt Pt. 2 by Pain of Salvation

Plus an honorable mention to Ghost by Devin Townsend

You can't tell I'm a 70's prog/jazz fusion fan can you?

Ahh Deconstruction, fantastic album. And reading yours reminded me of some more honorable mentions to add to mine:

Tommy Giles - Pulse
BtBaM - The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues
Mastodon - The Hunter
Machine Head - Unto the Locust

There was music released this year? Huh. I really haven't been taking notice. Call it self-preservation I guess, haven't had the money to buy much so it's probably better if I just don't find out what's released. I know a lot of bands I love released stuff, but yeeeeah.

Off the top of my head, the only thing I can remember buying was 'Yolk' by Japanese Voyeurs, which was pretty good if you like that sort of thing. Which I do. Because they remind me a bit of QueenAdreena and Daisy Chainsaw, for reasons that'll become obvious if you listen for a few seconds.

Actually, I gave in and bought 'Colors' to see if I could make myself like it. We'll call that one a partial success.

If I'm allowed individual songs... I reckon this here is what I've listened to most, but it wasn't released this year.

I'll edit this later if I think of anything else.

EDIT: oh right yeah, Radiohead and Mogwai.

It was hard to choose my favorite album, but I think I've come to a conclusion:

5. The Hunter - Mastodon
4. The Collective - Scale the Summit
3. The King of Limbs - Radiohead
2. Ghost - The Devin Townsend Project
1. Heritage - Opeth

I did not hear a lot of releases from 2011 relative to other years. The ones I'd put at the top:

Ske - 1000 Autunni. Italian "progressive" chameleon.

Von Hertzen Brothers - Stars Aligned. Modern prog I guess.

William D. Drake - The Rising of the Lights. The reclusive disturbed half-brother of Cardiacs.

I should check out "Grace for Drowning" as I have most of the Porcupine Tree / Steve Wilson discography but I didn't really feel a rush after the reviews kept calling it his homage to King Crimson... I already have all the King Crimson albums after all .

Ya, to say it's influenced by King Crimson is a bit of an understatement, and it's refreshing to hear a new take on it (as a gigantic KC fan who owns almost all of the albums)

This year was great for math rock releases. I'd say my favorites were;

You Wanna Kiss About It? by Bulletproof Tiger
...and then by birdbath
Pink Magick by Giraffes? Giraffes!
Killer Tofu by Stage Kids
Let it Out by I Kill Giants [Available with a "choose your own price" model w/ no minimum]

There were a few albums that caught my ear from other genres too, like;

Oscillate by Obstacles (Psychedelic/Progressive-esque thing) [No minimum for buying this one either]
Lotus by Lotus (Electronic/Funk)
Old Trees by Benn Jordan (Breakbeat)
Something Fierce by Marian Call (Indie Folk/Singer-Songwriter)
Warm Blooded Lizard by Nym (Downtempo/Trip-hop)
