I love bacon, but that's probably because I'm a human being. It's freakin' delicious. So when I saw a Something Awful thread about The Bacon Challenge, I knew I had to go through with it. So I modified it for my own means, and here's what's up:
For the entirety of this week (or until I'm out of bacon) I'm going to add bacon to every savory meal I make. The challenge is to discover a dish that cannot be improved with the addition of bacon.
Some rules:
Code: | *Bacon will be ADDED to dishes. There would be no challenge if I made a meatloaf out of bacon; that's just too much salt.
*Yes, a vegetarian dish would be ruined by bacon. That's why that's cheating, too.
*Bacon will only be added to SAVORY dishes.
*Unfortunately, I will be using American bacon, unless someone knows a place that would carry back bacon other than a butcher. |
Tonight, I will be making a minestrone soup and some pasta. Obviously, bacon is going to improve this tenfold, but I'll report on it later anyway.
If any of you have any recipe ideas to give the challenge a run for its money, I'll be glad to make something.
One final note: SAVORY basically means "not sweet."
Savory dishes: steak, broccoli casserole, stuffed mushrooms.
Sweet dishes: cereal, almost anything with fruit, ice cream.
Only savory dishes will have bacon added.
----------------------------------
Meals 3 and 4: Pizza and Eggs
Pizza:
-Sausage, onion, and pineapple pizza from Pizza Machine
-Obviously, bacon is a winner
-This wasn't for a challenge; I just wanted pizza
Eggs:
-Not cooked enough
-Eggs with bacon: Good
-Eggs with bbq sauce and bacon: Great
-Eggs with peppered bacon salt: Eh. I don't usually salt my eggs anyway, though. I'll test bacon salt on something I'd normally salt (soy sauce?) and see what happens).
-Eggs with bacon, bacon salt, pepper, and bbq sauce: Mmmmmmmm...
Bacon is a winner.
Next meal will be a bacon cheeseburger at B-Dubs. I'm thinking Asian Zing sauce, but we could also do Spicy Garlic or Southwest Chipotle. NOT BLAZIN'.
Just for the hell of it: Bacon Vodka
Well, guys, it's been three weeks. Three weeks with a strip of bacon sitting in a jar in my cabinet, complete with post-it note reading "Do NOT open until 10/14!" Before I write about the flavor, here's my recipe:
Code: | *Cook 1 strip of bacon (I used maple/brown sugar bacon)
*Place cooked bacon in a jar
*Pour vodka into the jar; at least enough to cover the bacon
*Seal the jar
*Wait three weeks
*Place the jar of bacon + vodka in the freezer (this freezes the bacon/fat/grease)
*When sufficiently cold, strain the solids out of the bacon vodka (a coffee filter works fine, just remember to have a container UNDERNEATH to catch the vodka [personal experience])
*Enjoy! |
On to the taste. It was interesting, to say the least. First, there was a sweet, mapley flavor. Second, a very interesting smokey flavor. Third, an aftertaste that made me wish I was dead.
All things considered, bacon vodka is awesome ... if you dare your friends to drink it. I have heard of restaurants serving bacon-infused bourbon or whiskey, which I think would turn out better. They start out woody anyway. _________________

^I can't stand mushrooms, but I can assure you that the addition of bacon would improve them greatly. _________________

Exactly. Thus, the entire point of your experiment is proven. |

I'll get to work on the Honey Mustard Challenge.
Then let's combine our results for the greatest oral orgasm ever known to humanity. _________________

Best of luck to you. (Sounds odd, but if you hit a dish where bacon doesn't work, I have a feeling it's going to taste terrible; here's hoping that doesn't happen).
I also want to point out that bacon ice cream has been done before if you are willing to experiment outside of the rules of the challenge. I remember seeing it on Iron Chef America (battle pork). _________________

There's no such thing as American bacon, it's just called bacon. You can call back bacon Canadian bacon if you want, but regular bacon is just called bacon everywhere in the world. |

1) You're using numbers in place of words.
2) You're spelling at the second grade level.
3) You're posting in CAPS.
4) This post is in the wrong place, and should have been in Software.
Conclusion: Custom songs are not your "cup of tea", and I'd suggest undertaking a much more simpler hobby. Perhaps tree watching. |

I LOVE me some Bacon. If I had a ton of bacon laying around, I'd so do this challenge. Good luck! _________________

It's not like he's just going to throw a full slab of bacon on top of whatever he makes and eat it that way :P _________________

OH GOD EVERYTHING SHOULD TASTE LIKE BACON!
Says you can find it at Meijer, but I've never seen it. Don't really purvey the spice section at Meijer, either. I'll have a look, but that's not for the challenge. That's personal use only.
Also, in America, bacon refers to belly bacon. Brits call it "streaky bacon," and it's usually thin-sliced and burned (I don't like it crispy). What the European/Australian is actually back bacon, which Americans call Canadian bacon. Unfortunately, Canadian bacon blows in America. Europeans get it in nice, thick slices; we get it pre-processed from Oscar Meyer (also crap).
I'm going with thick-sliced hickory bacon, and I'll undercook it so it's still soft. _________________

That sounds awesome though!
I am excited for the reports. _________________

I'm really bad at determining what is savory or not, but I've had some bizarre thoughts trying to think of the grossest thing you could make by adding bacon to something:
Garlic bread with bacon on top.
Sushi with bacon.
Baconated coffee. |
