You could try moongel. It has the same effect as tissues and tape, but it just costs more... lol.

I can't imagine why so many people waste more money than they need to.

Moongels are way better than tape. They're smaller, they don't look as shitty, and they generally work better at dampening overtones.

Also, to whoever mentioned writing on your snare batter, I don't think writing on your head is bad for it. I know for a fact that the drummer for Origin writes the setlist on the edges of the head. I could be wrong, maybe it does hurt it if you do it in excessive amounts.

I bet I can achieve whatever you can with a Moongel or O-ring with tape. :P

Alright guys, I have a question for any drummer that really knows their stuff.

I'm looking into buying a drum set to start off with, and I'm looking to spend 3-4 thousand, I'm looking into a kit that let's me play a lot of metal stuff (Lamb of God, In Flames, Killswitch Engage, etc etc), now here's where my predicament comes in.

I can either buy a TD-12 electronic kit, with Iron Cobra double bass, and a hi-hat stand, which will run me almost 4 grand, but I'm not sure if an E-Kit is a good kit to begin with, I maybe can go acoustic, but the noise factor will piss a lot of people I live with off, and I think I can get more out of an acoustic kit for 4 grand than an E-Kit, what do you guys think I should do?

Tune it how you want.

Then just tape a tissue to a place where you won't hit it on the top head. If you go to page 8 I believe you can see an example. The more tissue, the less resonance and overtone.

I love you so much.

Anyway I need a china cymbal (looking for 18-19in.) and It seems like Wuhan is the way to go. Any major objections I should know about?

Chinas come in a very wide range of sounds. Anything in particular you are looking for?

Wuhans are very popular, and cheap. However I heard they are prone to cracking faster. If anything, you should try to grab several different sizes depending on your taste.

I have a 12" Wuhan china that came in a two-pack with a 12" splash... took 2 years of beating the crap out of it to break it, so I'd say it held up pretty well.

Besides, if you break a Wuhan, you can just buy another one for 5 bucks or whatever. They're incredibly cheap. (Not thaaat cheap, but I'd say $80 at the most for a pretty big china.)

EDIT: Actually, I just did a quick search, and you can get an 18" china and a 10" splash in a pack for $60 from zzsounds.

Hell, you can buy a 22" Wuhan gong for less than most 16 to 18" crashes. Awesome.

I'd say your best bet is to buy a mid-range acoustic kit, and buy a set of mesh heads, triggers, and a electronic drum kit module. That way you could go electronic for practice, and when you want to play acoustically all you'd have to do is put on the real heads, tune 'em up, and you're good to go. I wouldn't even bother with electronic cymbal pads (triggered cymbals always sound terrible to me), just mute your real cymbals with practice pads.

Im thinking about purchasing the Roland TD-9S, or If my parents throw me a extra $1,000 I'll get the TD-9SX's, anybody have either of these kits? Were they worth the money?
