I still go to the movies because the theater I go to has something new to offer. That's right, beer and food. I talk about this place a lot but it's my favorite thing to do for fun. It's dinner and a movie condensed into one event! What could be better? They also make their own additional (hilarious) fake previews before the film, and periodically have special events (such as playing all 3 LotR films in a row and serving a "Hobbit Feast"), which makes it really unique and more exciting than just a standard movie.
Movie tickets are 5 bucks a pop, and you can get some pretty good food for a standard restaurant price. I still enjoy the experience of going to the regular theater: surround sound, gigantic screen, previews... but my Drafthouse theater is awesome for other reasons too. Mainly, people under 18 aren't allowed without parents. No more annoying middle school or high school kids hollering and acting like idiots. It's definitely an "adult" movie-going experience.
I must be the only person who never buys DVDs. I simply can't stand the idea of buying a DVD on a whim and ending up not liking the movie, so if I touch a DVD it's through a rental and nothing else. Even when it's a movie I like, I almost never re-watch movies. There are so many movies to be seen, why watch one twice or more? I hope to get a Netflix subscription soon, perhaps as a wedding present... because I love to watch movies but the theater AND DVD-buying experience is a bit pricey regardless of how much I love movies. :p _________________

It's the social experience for me. Usually, whenever any of my friends or I are planning to go see a movie, we get a large group together and plan to go watch the movie as a group. After the movie, we just sit on the trunks of our cars or hang out in a giant circle (either in the parking lot, or in the park nearby) and just talk for hours. The movie's not even really the point of going to the movies for most of us, it's just a reason to get everyone together so we can hang out afterward. (For a few of us, however, the movie's still big: One or two of my friends and I are film buffs, them moreso than myself, and we like to talk about the movie we just watched.) _________________

The Studio 35 theater in North Columbus is the same sort of experience. Decent food, great selection of beer on tap, and classic films every weekend. I think that's the kicker. They play some new movies, too, but on weekend nights they always play older films (including Rocky Horror Picture Show every other Saturday night!). I think every city should have a theater that cares about its clients, the cinematic experience, and classic films enough to provide this sort of service. I'd love to open and operate a theater like this one day. It's too bad many people can't appreciate old movies, expensive beer, etc. _________________
