Not sure about Death Cab, but a good chunk of Weezer's stuff is definitely power-pop - the Green Album probably more so than any of the others.

Just listening to fun. so I thought I'd check up their website to see what they're up to... turns out they're on tour across the US (plus Toronto) for a couple of months, starting next week. If they're anywhere near as good live as they are on record, etc... can't wait for them to come back over here.

I'd totally go to the Charlotte show if it wouldn't run me $250 (plus food, merch etc). I'm trying to save whatever I can and my hours (and hourly pay) at work have been cut. :<

Ugh, what are they thinking going to Houston? The people in Austin would eat them up. Because that's on a Wednesday night, I definitely can't go, otherwise I'd imagine they are worth the 3 hour drive.

I have checked out so many bands going on tour this summer, and a lot more of them aren't even going through Texas at all... it's really surprising. Most bands at least hit up Dallas and Houston, but if they're smart they'll come to Austin where the shows sell out every day (about to head to a packed Coheed and Cambria, and on Saturday I went to a 100% sold out show of Yellowcard).

Hopefully the New Pornographers come back soon, on a day that's not my wedding this time. ;P

Edit: Speaking of Weezer, they sold out 2 nights here already (same venue as those other bands I mentioned) - one night of the Blue Album and one night of Pinkerton. That would be awesome to see.

Yeah, it seems to be a bit of a trend at the moment, this 'bands missing seemingly obvious places' thing. I've noticed a lot of tours over here that somehow manage to completely miss London (not that I'm in London any more, so it doesn't really affect me, but still...). Morrissey's tour in June consists of five dates in Scotland, four right up in the north of England and one down in the far south-west. Weird.

EDIT, because I've made a couple of posts without mentioning them... The New Pornographers are also on tour across the US, starting on Wednesday. Good news! Unless you live in Texas. Sorry Hailz :/

This was posted on t'other side as a RBN announcement but I thought it deserved a place in here too 'cos it's properly brilliant. And unlike fun. who just sound like they're writing songs for a musical, this actually IS from a musical.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YK6Gk2Nfav0

If you like that, the album is free to download: http://stagehands.bandcamp.com/

Obligatory NP mention: I just found out today that one of their songs is in a Kindle advert. Seems it's been for a while but it's new to me 'cos they show a different one over here, which is rubbish apart from the gorgeous redhead at the end.

I guess it's about time for my annual-ish remembering of how much I love this song and this band in general - it also stands as a pretty good example of why Sweden is the best country in the world.

Also this, which doesn't appear to be on YouTube anywhere, apart from inconveniently right at the end of a video that's three songs run together. Everything should sound like Nerf Herder. Tonight's other listening: Chixdiggit!, Shonen Knife, other stuff on the pop end of pop-punk.

Obligatory mention of The New Pornographers, because the topic title dictates it: I posted this before but nobody replied... they have the best videos, hands down.

Double-post, but that's not surprising for this topic...

Just saw the Kindle ad with the New Pornographers song on TV over here for the first time. Now I can be all like "THAT. THERE. THAT'S THE BAND I'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT NON-STOP SINCE LIKE FOREVER AGO!" at my family every time it's on. This is genuinely exciting for me.

EDIT because a triple post would be a bit excessive: this song keeps on coming back to my attention at random moments and I'm really quite happy with that. Oh yeah, and I played my mum the New Pornographers song from that ad and she was like "oh that's quite nice actually". I'm claiming victory.

I have been lambasted for not posting here, so...

New Pornographers. Pretty great band, right? I think I'm a bit atypical though in that Challengers is my favorite album. It seems more subdued and reflective but still has the bouncy crazy stuff like All the Things... and Mutiny, I Promise You. Twin Cinema has a ton of great tracks too. Together took a while to grow on me but it has... it just seemed too mellow at first, but now I take it for what it is. Reminds me, there are some B-sides I need to pick up off iTunes. Not sure if I'd go as far as to get the live stuff but I might at some point. I have all five studio albums and I'm feeling kind of completist about them.

I also saw of Montreal mentioned in here. I picked up the Hissing Fauna album after playing Heimdalsgate... on RBN, and there's some pretty good stuff there, particularly the bonus track No Conclusion. Parts of the album were kind of annoying (when he turns it up to 11 I guess) but I found it to be generally fresh and progressive in the non-genre sense of the word. I haven't picked anything else up yet since the reviews of the earlier stuff suggest a search to find their sound and the reviews of the later stuff say they're a rehash, so not sure where to go.

I tried out XTC about ten years ago but they suffered from the fact that everyone pushing them on me acted as if they were the voice of God and so my naturally contrarian nature kicked in and I rejected it. I haven't mentioned other bands brought up here if I didn't actually like them, but I do mention XTC because I'm curious if I'd be more receptive now that I'm a bit older and less odd-time-signature-centric.

I will have to check out Big Star and Shoes. Missed those previously.

Two other bands I've come to enjoy the last few years (not sure if they are pop or indie or whatever) are Mew and MGMT. Few of my friends give a rat's ass about either band, sadly.
