Every once in a while I check in here just to see if anything interesting is happening. This is my first post in three years, actually. Five years since I posted with any sort of regularity. I doubt anybody remembers me here, since I wasn't exactly a big name back when I actually used Scorehero, but whatever.
I graduated High School shortly after I left, went to college, and stopped going to college two years later for lots of reasons. Since then I've been working management jobs in food service. I'm looking to eventually get into game design and to go back to school for that.
I still play video games, but my GH and RB stuff just sort of gathers dust in the corners of my room outside of special occasions. RB3 was the last game I really played, since I had a bunch of people to play with in college.
For a little while I was active on Smogon's forums, but that was only for a couple of months. These days I mainly hang out on a fairly obscure forum called the Talkhaus. It's a forum for an LPer that mostly plays Super Mario World romhacks.
That's it, I guess. It's actually kind of nostalgic just posting here again. |

Fun to see members who were barely teens when they joined here graduating from college now :)
I had 1 kid way back when I started hanging around here and that's how it was when I hung up the towel. I've got 3 kids now. Still making videogames, did a long stint at Crystal Dynamics working on Tomb Raider, currently working at Ubisoft in San Francisco (the team behind Rocksmith).
With rhythm games making a bit of a comeback, I decided to come back here and rejoin the greatest community I've ever been a part of. _________________

I could have sworn that I posted here in the last couple months but I guess I didn't hit send or something... but I'm glad I didn't because a lot has happened recently anyways.
I joined here when I was in 7th grade, just a couple months before my 13th birthday... my playing definitely dwindled about halfway through high school because the massive hours I was devoting previously could not be sustained if I wanted decent grades, girls to like me, be good at running, etc., but I do think I stayed around ScoreHero pretty consistently thereafterwards (no way that's a word).
I am currently a junior at Vanderbilt, with a major in Chemical Engineering and minors in Chemistry and Engineering Management... but recently I've discerned that I want to teach high school chemistry/math, as well as coach cross country and track, so I'm exploring ways to pursue that path but at the moment it appears that will mean graduating with the degree I'm currently pursuing and also going to school for a fifth year to get a Master's of Secondary Education here at Vandy as well.
I've gotta say this was the best year of my life--I had a spiritual revelation of sorts; I definitely have broadcasted to this site that I'm a Catholic but earlier this year I realized that if I really believe the stuff I believe, then it's a big deal and I need to take it a lot more seriously. I pretty clearly recognized God's role in my life and now that I've made the clear decision to pursue Him, it's given me so much fulfillment and happiness, as well as provided challenge, and I know that it's formative for me for the rest of my life. Aside: I have a link to a post I made in the American Attitudes Towards Atheism thread... I made that post as a Sophomore in high school. And it's amazing to me how little I knew about my faith back then but felt confident enough to represent the entire Church lol
Guitar Hero somehow continues to make itself present in my life haha. After the first two months of freshman year, I brought my 360 and EVERY Guitar Hero game and I had the game around the whole year. I did a few things like FC The Way It Ends but for the most part it made my room a social center for everyone in my dorm, people loved to come and play the games and all hang out. I've met a few other ScoreHero'ers on campus and I've always loved being able to put faces to names I've seen for years online.
This past year (Sophomore year) I didn't bring any video games to school so it NEARLY disappeared from my life... but second semester I pledged the Christian fraternity at school, and I challenged the entire fraternity to a Guitar Hero battle: 20 straight songs, me vs. whoever thought they could beat me. If I won all 20 songs then our pledge class would be alleviated of certain tasks, if I lost any of the 20 songs then we could have to do the tasks twicefold. Of course, I won every song (not without close calls though--I beat one guy on Mississippi Queen by 150 points, we both FC'ed and I hit a squeeze. He knew the path).
I've been playing a little bit this summer, sort of just for fun. I think I'll have my games for this upcoming year, but I have been so busy I just can't see myself investing too much time into it. But that's ok. Such is life :)
It's also fascinating to me how big of a part of my life this site played. Easily the #1 forum I was ever a part of. I definitely logged onto this site more than I did onto FaceBook which is saying a lot. I do miss it, and boy do I hope some miracle will happen to get the ball rolling here again. _________________

Well, I vaguely remember when I stopped posting on here. I haven't touched a GH/RB game since my RB3 disc stopped working just before the last piece of HMX DLC came before the long hiatus.
Since that time, I graduated from high school and am persuing a major in Creative Writing. I'm coming up with very complicated stories right now. I've become a person who would actively try to be involved in the world around me.
The scary thing is that GH/RB died when I was a freshman in high school. They'll be coming back when I'm a sophomore in college. XD
I am excited for RB4, even though I may have to end up pirating the songs I bought for DLC when I was on 360 (I refuse to get an Xbox One and I doubt songs will carry over from 360 to PS4. Plus, my brother deleted the account I bought RB songs with long ago). I'd still legally pay for any DLC other than that as I have no animosity towards HMX. _________________

Oh God that reminds me that I won my fraternity's Guitar Hero tournament at our Game-A-Thon (ran by yours truly) and won a $20 gift card to a local pizza place. 8th grade me would've been so proud. Doesn't it feel good that all of those years playing plastic guitar would pay off for some free pizza? Worth it. Oh, and a small plaque (which I also made...). _________________

It's nice to see some familiar faces. I, like many others, made this account when I was a lot younger. I always cringe going through my old post history, I definitely liked argue about things I thought I understood. I'm sure there is a life lesson in there somewhere.
I just graduated this past April with a degree in Neuroscience, a degree in History and Philosophy of Science, a minor in Chemistry and a certificate in the Conceptual Foundations of Medicine. I am in the process of applying to medical school this cycle. I think I played Guitar Hero a bit during my freshman year of college, but besides the occasional song over holiday breaks, I've been done for quite a while. I spent a lot of time on this game, and this site will always have a special place in my life as I grew up. _________________

I've been working at a mail processing warehouse for the past 1.5 years. Got my GED last November, going to a community college in August for Business Administration. Bought a new car recently, looking for a higher paying job.
Haven't really played many video games over the past few weeks. Don't touch GH anymore and the only RB I play is drum customs (that'll change when RB4 comes out though). Other than that I usually only play Hearthstone or the random game with friends online. I'd rather focus my time/energy on bettering my life right now than gaming.
Still live at home with my mother and grandma. Planning on moving out at the end of the year. I'm 23 going on 24 in July and really want to be out there on my own. It'll be hard but it's about time.
I don't visit SH anymore but I still hang out in the (mostly) dead SH IRC channel. Most of my best friends right now I've met through SH. |

Okay, sure.
I signed up for this site when I was about 13. Thank God I'm not the only one in this thread. Anyone else regret your usernames? I go by SFenton everywhere else but here. I just picked my name because I really liked the Raimi Spider-Man flicks...
Anyways, around the time Rock Band 2 came out, I got involved with the team trying to work custom songs on Wii. The things they eventually ended up doing with the system- patches, loading content from an external HDD, requiring a legitimate disc to play, removing easy piracy from the system- really opened my eyes to just how cool software engineering was.
I wrote my first code my senior year of high school while trying (and failing) to learn guitar through Rock Band 3. (I also got my first 360 and migrated all my music games to that platform around this time. What a great online community!) I was a terrible programmer. Legit code from first C++ DirectX project:
Code: |
// Slows the system down so it doesn't render everything at once.
for (int i = 0; i < 1000000000000; i++)
{
}

...yeah.
I entered Virginia Tech as a freshman hoping to major in Computer Science. I met several singers, but only one guy (who was in the parkour club, found him on the Rock Band side) who played GH/RB. Around this time I also scrimped, saved, and sold things I had so I could afford the first Rocksmith bundle, one of the most important purchases I've ever made.
Four years later, I have a great YouTube channel going, I'm a pretty good (IMO) guitarist, I still love playing GH/RB for the drums. I'm very excited for Guitar Hero Live, and I'm pretty excited for Rock Band 4 as well. I've graduated from Tech with the aforementioned degree and a minor in mathematics, and I start work at Microsoft in the fall (I'm not in Xbox, but damn if I'm not going to move there eventually- I love games!).
But music games have by far shaped a lot of me. My first "job" was a tracker for Rock Band Network (which conveniently got me my first internship). I still have seven plastic guitars, one drumset, the Mustang, the Squier, a Roland kit, a Yamaha keyboard, the plastic keyboard, two MIDI boxes, a few mics. I have three real guitars and two basses, along with amps and pedals. In terms of software design, I've recently tried to pick up DSP programming and audio analysis for fun before I start work.
Can't wait to play with everyone in October \m/ _________________

Oddly enough I went on to chase a dream of pro wrestling. I am close to 2 years in this world I have met some of the names I remember seeing on tv every Monday, some internet darlings and my biggest inspiration Stan Hansen. I met my current girlfriend through this endeavor and she supports anything I am willing to try while keeping me level headed. I couldn't be happier with the choices I have made. As for Rock Band and Guitar Hero I had zero desire to bring up either game out of my closet out of fear of the addiction it became when we spent more on plastic instruments and dlc well beyond the 4 figures. Even so RB4 is coming out and with DLC transferring over I cant say no. So I busted out the old GH2 Xplorer and offered to do some co op with my girlfriend and had flash backs to frequenting this site, the day TTFaF's opening was announced, Jordan being FC'ed, the day drumkits were announced, said drum kits thought my brother to play drums and he now takes traveling gigs in 2 bands just all kinds of neat stuff.
Also heres a match I was in. #plug

Neither I am the one who got his hair cut.
The guy in the Pink is Brutus the Barber Beefcake and his tag partner was gonna be Ricky Morton but he got injured so they replaced him with Chance Prophet. I have the blue shirt at the start and since I am new I am my tag partners "youngboy" sounds bad at first but considering my tag partner is a deathmatcher who is kinda blowing up on the indie scene its not that a bad thing. _________________

edit: Seven years later, and I am still incapable of being concise when I am on this damn website. I swear to you I'm actually really good at it these days!
Oh my goodness I love this thread idea. 2008 Alakaiser is super proud of this thread.
I actually just logged on to get all nostalgic and re-read the post I made when I stepped down as a mod to go follow my dream and work at Harmonix. About a dozen times, I mentioned that I'd still be an active part of the site. Ha. Hooooo boy. Well. Yeah. Hmm.
Harmonix round 1 was a blast. I worked on an insane amount of DLC, was there for the final weeks of Rock Band 2 development, and got to see The Beatles Rock Band from beginning to end. A few other projects (Lego!) were mixed in there, too.
I met a ton of incredible people while working there. I'm sure that's a shocker that a company that makes the games that are the entire reason this site exists would be kinda cool. Well, they definitely lived up to the reputation.
After the layoff, I jumped into RBN (which was the final thing I worked on at Harmonix back then) with RockGamer for a brief period, though it became clear pretty fast I was burned out on music games in general. Professionally, I bounced around a bit before an extended period as a paralegal, which is really the only logical next step after video game QA. Is...is that not how it usually goes?
Anyway.
Personally, I got to travel a bunch. Up until 2009, I had never left the east coast of the US at any point in my life, so after the layoff, I did the only responsible thing and spent a ton of money on travel. GDC in 2010 was a particular highlight.
The crazy thing, though, is PAX.
You guys, y'all have made PAX really weird for me. I don't know if it's necessarily anyone in this thread (Brock, I've totally met you once or twice at this point I'm pretty sure also oh my god I'm sorry for not being positive about it), but I've met a bunch of you at PAX East in particular at this point, and it's always this crazy thing. Like...I've had a few people come up to where I didn't recognize their username at all and they were SUPER excited to meet me.
It's tough to explain, and I really don't want to sound like an egotistical prick about it. It's kind of weird, and I still don't entirely know how to react to it. Hopefully if you met me I didn't come across as some aloof jackass. It's super rad, especially in the cases where I'm putting faces to names I've known for seven or eight years at this point. I even signed autographs at PAX East this year?!*
And...that's where I'm at now. Back at Harmonix, working on Rock Band 4. Working with a ton of people I worked with in 2009, and a bunch of new (to me, or straight up new) people; all of them are incredible at their jobs. It's tough to keep up with them.
We're making an awesome game. I know it's tough to take my word for it with the baby blue username, but I am absolutely talking as a fan. The freestyle guitar solo feature is incredible (I'm in the behind the scenes video reveal!) And that's just my personal favorite - we're adding a ton of awesome things into this game.
This isn't an advertisement for RB4, though. I mostly have just been super nostalgic all night for a few reasons, so I figured I'd come in and say hey. And thank you all for being responsible for me having a really crazy cool life with weird stories. Harmonix recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, and I got the opportunity to tell a few of my stories to some folks. It was rad.
So yeah, thanks for making me a Q-list internet celebrity. Wait, U-list. Uhh...Y-list. I...you get the idea. Imacarrot is a waaaaaay bigger deal than me anyway. Dude worked on Tomb Raider you guys. Have you played Tomb Raider because seriously it's fucking awesome where's my advance copy of the new one sheesh
* - Funny story. Someone from here who was at the Harmonix party this year (was it you???) asked me if I'd become more active at SH since RB4 was just announced so things were coming back to life a bit. I had already had a couple of conversations of going back to HMX at that point, so I gave the most ridiculous non-answer I could muster without actually giving anything away. So...sorry about that! _________________

Do deathmatches still draw? I kinda figured after CZW started to tone it down and WWE went PG that deathmatches were a thing of the past. Even the new FMW is much more restrained.
Have you worked any notable indie promotions? And what's your favorite promotion to watch right now? Mine's NXT and Lucha Underground. _________________
