Question. Why's Eddie Van Halen #70? It's one thing to have a disagreement about him not being the BEST guitarist of all time, but for him to not even be in the top 50 is...astonishing.
I call shenanigans on this list. _________________

Wow. Jack White even being on the list is ridiculous. If you listen to his "solos" you get a new appreciation for those guitar noobs playing Metallica songs terribly around the schools of America. |

lol yeah I've seen this before. It is pretty much bullshit.
Now, I'm probably the BIGGEST Beatles fan on the planet earth.... but even I think that ranking is shit. If we were talking greatest BANDS of all time, sure, I'd go with that. But George Harrison is NOT known for any sort of guitar-playing skill. In a list where George Harrison is ranked as having more guitar skillz than Dick Dale or Van Halen... I say: Bullshit, good sir!
The only thing I agree with on the list is the high ranking of Eric Clapton. But just about everything else seems completely off. Oh, and the complete absence of Michael Angelo Batio is kind of shitty too lol. _________________

You guys do realize that this is 100% opinion? Everyone would have different lists if they each made their own. Rather than bitching about how messed up the rankings are, why don't you make your own list. _________________

lol, you're right, but unfortunately some people's opinion matter more. Like, if some movie won an academy award that everybody hated except the academy... too bad! The academy's opinion wins. I'd make up my own list, sure, but nobody would care lol.
I'd expect any list like this to cause disagreements and controversy.... just because everybody disagrees about who number one should be. But if Rolling Stone is going to put out a list like this, they'd better be damn sure that for the most part it reflects the public opinion. Certain names should be included in here that are not, even if it is an outdated list. You can't please everybody, but you should at least try! _________________

I think the biggest confusion here is some people may be reading it as the 100 most SKILLED guitarists. In that sense, this is list is obviously complete garbage, but I think it's more a combination of skill, songwriting ability, and influence. With that as a basis for the list, I can completely see why George Harrison is on the list. Similarly, Joe Satriani, while a phenomenally skilled player, doesn't really do much for me.
That's not to say the list isn't complete BS, just wanted to point out that shredding virtuosos usually get snuffed on these pointless lists RS likes to make because of their criteria. _________________
