You should put the bands people recommend in the OP... because I doubt many people will look through several pages of bands listening to all of them. Anyways here are my suggestions, listed by genre.
Melodic death metal: Deadlock, Scar Symmetry, Disarmonia Mundi
Progressive Death metal: The Faceless, Born of Osiris
Death Metal: Neaera
Instrumental prog-metal: Animals as Leaders
Progressive rock: Porcupine Tree, Three
Power Metal: Dark Moor, Lost Horizon
Alternative Rock: Ra
Alternative Metal: Flaw
Metalcore: Heaven Shall Burn
Industrial: Combichrist
Reggae: The Expendables
Orchestral/"Epic" music: Immediate Music, X-Ray dog, Globus
Rap: Tech N9ne
Instrumental Synth-prog: check my sig
If anyone wants suggestions for songs by these groups, PM me. Some are better known than others, I know... _________________

Aloud (Rock/Indie/Pop): If you were to look at the most played songs on my ipod, most of the top 20 would be songs by Aloud. These guys are may favorite band, and they do everything by themselves. Their first album is up for free download here: http://www.gimmesound.com/aloud/index.cfm Their lyrics are very intelligent & inspired, and the vocally driven songs also have very strong guitars. Their vocal combination features amazing male (think a rougher version of John Lennon) and female (think a smoother version of Janis Joplin) voices. I just love how Aloud creates great hooks and poppy sing sing along sections without losing the kickass rocking edge to their sound.

The Lights Out (Rock/Indie/Alternative): The Lights Out is a great Classic Rock indie band, with strong smooth catchy vocals with great guitar and drums. One of my favorite songs of theirs is Gotta Get Outta Here, a really catchy song, and can be downloaded for free here. They also have their second ep up for free: http://www.gimmesound.com/TheLightsOut/

Thick as Thieves (Indie/Alternative/Rock): This is a great progressive/alternative band with a great vocalist that has a large range. They're kind of similar to Dredg and You Shall Know us by the trail of the dead. They are very technical and while some songs really show off their artistic range, their singles still really rock.

Lights Resolve (Rock/Alternative/Pop): This is a great unsigned band, they have a great sound. They deliver a rocking sound with a poppy edge. They are a 3 person band, their vocalist actually left of their previous band. Then the guitarist took some vocal lessons, and found out that he had some serious chops. They're a great band that has potential to become well known. Also, their live performances are very theatrical and amazing.

Though certainly not "unknown" by any sense of the conventional meaning, Local H is one of my all-time favorite bands and they are most definitely "underappreciated." Anyone over the age of 25 probably remembers them as those "Keep it copasetic" guys, but they've been consistently putting out rockin' albums since '95. I would definitely suggest picking up Whatever Happened To PJ Soles? or their most recent effort 12 Angry Months, a most excellent breakup record.
Also, the kickass three-piece out of Vegas known as "Insolent Will" is definitely unknown....at least to anyone not hanging in my buddy Benny's living room circa 2003-2004

They were unknown to me until I listened to Pandora's Nightwish station. I never heard anything about them. My bad. _________________

For anybody into prog rock/metal check out Linear Sphere. They might be a little more well known now since they opened for Cynic (once) a while back, but I still have yet to meet anybody that's heard of them. Vocals are a little iffy though, but they still kick ass and Martin Goulding is one of the best guitarists around. _________________

So far I've sat through 7 minutes of bass or something and I don't know what is happening. There are still 84 minutes in this song. _________________

Combustion Chamber are a Dutch band who play music that lies between rock, jazz and classical styles.
The Dramatics were a soul band who had some success in the early 70s; somehow they never became as big as they should have. _________________

I Googled them, and some guy said he sped up the tracks and they're basically simple tunes slowed way down. ¯\(°_o)/¯ _________________

Honest Bob and the Factory-to-Dealer Incentives.
That is all. And after you buy their CD, you're welcome. _________________
