I don't mean for this to sound like an advertisement but for anyone interested in fanmade video games such as Zelda, I'd suggest visiting the following website:
http://www.thegaminguniverse.com/forum/index.php?board=92.0
Link is to a subforum with all your Zelda Making needs.......
This program allows you to create your own Zelda game (Link to the Past style). You do need to know a little bit of programming but if you don't there are members that will be more than happy to help you out. I've been a member for 4 years and we could use the activity and some new faces that like fanmade games (there are more than just Zelda too). If anything, great community (not near as big as here though). Check it out, some of you guys might really like it.
There are even full Zelda made games and demos you can play. Really fun if you liked Zelda: Link to the Past.
Again, sorry for the plug. Thought some might be interested in it is all |

Well, a couple of years ago I used a program called RPG Maker 2000 to create my own Zelda game. It was really hard to create A Link to the Past style battles, because the battles are usually RPG style. I might download and try to use the program you linked to, I'm bored these days.
EDIT: Say, I searched around the site, where can you find the program needed to create the games?
EDIT 2: I found it, and tried to use it, but I don't get it. I think I'll stick to my RPG Maker, it's easier to use, but I think it's much more complicated to create an on-field battle system. _________________

Do you try to make the games fit the story canon, or do you just make "a Zelda game?" _________________

You can actually make all kinds of games with it but the easiest is making Zelda type games.
Thunderalex, it seems complicated at first, but there are packs you can download that have everything already programed to the point where it's almost like RPG Maker. At least you gave it a shot, thanks |

This probably isn't going to go along with what you're saying, but if you want to play a fan made ROM hack of Link to the Past, play Parallel Worlds. Its a complete overhaul with 100% new content. And it is hard as FUCK
Obviously I can't link to a Link to the Past ROM, but google can get that. Then you just patch it, and off you go. Its really hard and confusing, so good luck if you play it. _________________

About the program: is is user-friendly? Do I need to do actual programming, or is it used like PRG Maker 2000? And @ ThunderAlex: how would you go across programming an on field battle in RPG Maker?
_________________

I saw a program that was like this, but with Zelda 1 stuff. It was mentioned in a Nintendo Power once, and it even had the web address for it. I tried it, didn't understand it, and went on with my life. Too bad I forgot the web address! >_<
This sounds interesting. I may try it out sometime. _________________

I've tried it -.- It's very hard. lol
As for user friendly, it can be if you download the right packs. So if you try it, download the newest Open Zelda pack available. This way, it is alot like RPG Maker to where you click and drop items. If you are good at coding that is also available and makes for a more complex game |

Wow, I used to be a major member of The Gaming Universe. Haven't visited there in a long long time though. I even had a special user title made for me after I won a bunch of their arcade tournaments like 4 years ago.
I used to love Zelda Classic as well as the lesser known Open Zelda, which required actual scripting.
The users there made some wicked LoZ fangames and re-makes, and that was years ago.......i can only imagine how good they are now.
Actually.......*goes back to check account* jesus, I signed up there back in 2003.......my god where does the time go? _________________

WOW
I am definitely going to have to check some of these out! Especially parallel worlds which if is anything like what i'm thinking will be amazing!
I haven't played Zelda since back on 64 but boy was it a love of mine. I used to spend days without coming out of my room trying to get every little secret. I know my parents used to flip cuz they would let me go to Blockbuster once a week and rent a game and I would always rent the same two no matter what, Link to the Past and Chrono Trigger!
Thanks for the posts guys and I can't wait to go out and play some of these! |

Here is one Zelda fan game I think is definately worth checking out: http://balladofthewindfish.blogspot.com/
It's described as a reimagining of Links Awakening for GB, but in full 3D like OoT. Here's a screenshot: |
