Although i don't listen to Jazz songs, i can listen to a trumpet or guitar go on for hours improvising, trading off solos and stuff.
I've been in my School's Jazz band since 5th grade, starting off on Snare, going to Bass Drum, then Trumpet, then Flugelbone (sp? Trombone but with Valves like trumpet. Ive never heard of it before then.), on to Keyboard, then Slide Trombone, BACK to trumpet, then my senior year, this past year, Baritone Sax. I pretty much played a new instrument every year, because our band only consisted of 20 or so people, so the director would need new stuff everyone year depending on who was still there.
I love to play Jazz on well, but was never good at improvising. Give me a written out solo thought and I would play it. _________________

I'm more into vocal jazz groups as I am in a jazz choir at my school (which is a lot of fun). A really good group is the 3 Mo Tenors. Here is a sample

I've been getting quite into jazz the past year to try and spice up my improv. I can understand why some people would call it incoherent noise, but to me, it's some really finely played music. Faves include Wes Montgomery, John Coltrane, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers... I'll have to go through my music library to give a full list =P _________________

I was wondering if anyone could recommend me some jazz fusion artists that play stuff in the came vein as this. It doesn't have to be instrumental, I don't really mind. |

I've been in Jazz Band since 7th grade, and it continued to be the best part of high school for me. I played lead trumpet the last 3 years. I don't plan on continuing my jazz playing, but I do plan on joining an orchestra in college...
My favorite artists right now are Pat Metheny and Michael Brecker (RIP). I just get lost in the music every time I hear a song by these two. I also like a majority of big band music; Count Basie, Ellington, etc. _________________

If someone asked me If I had a hero, and I could only say one person, that person would no doubt be Michael Brecker. Such an inspirational person. I like Delta City Blues
Oh and at eastwinn, that was a really awesome song but I've never heard of anything like it. I'll look for more songs like that and post them here if I find any though. [/url] _________________

I just graduated from high school and I was apart of a school system where jazz was always the best thing at the school. Our school is a band program that annually gets awards from Downbeat magazine, so it was an honor and a priviledge to play with them.
There was never a moment that wasn't mind opening when my director spoke, he's a great guy and I'll never forget what he's done for me. (Which is why I'm going into Music Education )
As I read, I read a lot about 7th grade, so I don't know the exact age group, but one thing I'd like to give to you guys is tuning. That was the number one thing my director always stressed. If you aren't in tune with yourself there's absolutely no way you'll be in tune with anyone else.
/rant
Uhh... anyway. I play trombone and I listen to a lot of Bill Watrous, Chris Potter, Kenny Garrett and Clifford Brown. I don't know why, but I really hate listening to piano solos. So, sorry to you piano playing SH members. _________________

Sorry for getting off-topic, but were you the Decatur that won Rolling Meadows this past winter? I was there, and the Decatur band that I saw was amazing. Kudos to your band and your director.

I also enjoy some Weather Report (Jaco...) and jazz guitar in general. Anyone have suggestions for some decent jazz guitarists? _________________

Well, I'm not really into Jazz (I don't mind listening to some here or there, though) but my older brother plays the alto sax and does a bit of jazz stuff, he is going to major in music in college (starts in August). So I hear him playing jazz stuff all the time.
It's pretty cool. _________________

I just got back from a music festival that was pretty much for expired hippies, and the band that went on after me was a Jazz type of band. Zappa Plays Zappa kind of stuff. It was awesome. Its so tasty its unbelievable. Their drummer was unreal, and their sings/accordion/trumpet player was from some eastern European country. I wanted to go up to him and be like "SING BERSERKER"
but he prolly doesn't watch too much of Clerks _________________

Yep, Decatur MacArthur. I was the lead bone player, it's a blast going to Rolling Meadows and hearing all of those bands and players. _________________

Just graduated HS, and I was in Jazz Band from 7th - senior year. Tenor sax up till the last two years where I played guitar on and off. I got the Jazz Musician of the year award on Friday morning at Senior Breakfast. This summer I will be working on improving on tenor sax/alto sax, clarinet, guitar, and maybe trumpet. _________________

Haven't seen much rhythm section representaiton in this topic! lol
But anyway, drummer myself, started playing jazz my sophomore year of high school with the school jazz band. My first two years were pretty much boring though, because we had another who was a year ahead of me and was pretty good. So my role was pretty much playing random auxillary drums that I had to make up my own part for. This year though, I'm going into my senior year and will finally be lead player.
Of the songs I've played on set though, my favorite is Big Noise From Winnetka. Any rhythm section jazz musician who's played it will probably say the same thing. |

To Hellashes, There is a great song called "I Remember Clifford" in his memory. Floogle feature, check it out.
My favorite type of jazz is big band jazz. I of course love the old stuff, Duke, Basie, Benny Carter, etc. But I also enjoy the modern stuff with Gordon Goodwin. _________________
